Malabar Giant Squirrels

  • The Malabar Giant Squirrel is a shy animal, which plays a laudable role in shaping habitat by engaging in seed dispersal.
  • A squirrel may build many nests in a small area in the forest.
  • It could be found in good numbers in the Satpura hill range in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • In 1984, the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary was developed in Maharashtra to protect the habitat of the Malabar/Indian Giant Squirrel in an area of 130
  • Least Concern as per IUCN.
  • The species is included in the Schedule II (Part II) of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
