What is ‘mating mind hypothesis’ in biology?

  • This refers to a scientific hypothesis which states that the evolution of the human brain was influenced primarily by the need to attract members of the opposite sex. In other words, the brain of a species evolved in order to improve its chances of winning in the battlefield of sexual selection.
  • The mating mind hypothesis was proposed by American evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller. Miller studied the behaviour of both men and women and found that their choices were influenced by their need to attract the opposite sex.
